Setting goals for members of your team does not always have to involve an active project or a measurable deadline. Goals can be born from errors or missteps.
Remember that mistakes can be a fantastic opportunity for learning and improvement. If a team member makes an error in judgment or handles a situation poorly, take the first opportunity you have to privately address him in person and help him understand:
• How he mishandled a situation
• The potential consequences and results of the mistake
• How he can better handle similar situation in the future
Giving an employee honest feedback and helpful tips to follow is a good way to help him along the path to self-improvement.
